Selective Mutism is a situational anxiety disorder characterized by a person's inability to speak and communicate in certain social settings such as school. These people may be able to communicate in other settings where they are relaxed and secure, such as at home. Outside of speech, all forms of communication may be inhibited to varying levels by situation. That includes written language, body language, gestures, and facial expression.
